January 2 (King World News) – On this day (+1) in 1921, the Washburn Crosby Co. was looking for a way to make correspondence with their clients a bit more “personal.” As a maker of cake mixes and “Gold Medal Flour”, they got a lot of mail from housewives seeking recipes or cooking hints, etc.

So they decided to invent a friendly, warm but fictitious person to write back to the customers. It should be female and have a friendly, homey name. They decided on Betty. And for a last name that seemed friendly but also hinted of kitchens and cooking they chose Crocker (which conveniently was also the surname of one of the Directors…talk about kissing up to management). Betty Crocker was such a hit that three years later they put the non-existent Betty Crocker on the radio. And when the Washburn Crosby Company became a key part of General Mills, the smart marketing people knew a corporate icon when they saw one. In a survey of the most admired and respected women (circa 1940) the non-existent Betty came in #2, losing by a hair to a certain Eleanor Roosevelt. Over the years Betty’s changed hairdos, outfits and recipes (add two tablespoons ground jalapeño pepper and drink lots of water) but she seems to age well.
