7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes region of Papua New Guinea

PAPUA, NG – An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea on Wednesday, the United States Geological Survey reported. The USGS said the quake’s epicenter was 47 miles west-southwest of the island state’s capital Bougainville and (58 km) 36.2 miles deep. The quake was preceded by several 5.0+ magnitude foreshocks. This is the fourth 7.0+ magnitude earthquake to strike the planet in less than a month. There have been no initial reports cited of damage or injuries. -TEP
