CHICAGO (MarketWatch) — Veteran NBC CMCSA -0.31% broadcaster Bob Costas stirred up angry comments on Twitter, Facebook and other social media after his remarks advocating gun control at halftime of the network’s “Sunday Night Football” telecast. Costas was commenting on Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher’s murder of his girlfriend and suicide on Saturday. He quoted from a column by FoxSports.com writer Jason Whitlock: “Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation, rather than avoiding it.” On Twitter, former Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain said Costas was “spewing sanctimonious dreck.” Breitbart.com’s John Nolte said: “Taking advantage of a captive halftime audience, Costas sucker punched millions with a left-wing preach about gun control.”
