US closes down its Syrian embassy, pulls staff
February 6, 2012
THE United States has closed its embassy in Syria and pulled out all its diplomats, CNN reported today, citing State Department officials.
The news channel said most of the 17 remaining US embassy staff members, including Ambassador Robert Ford, travelled by convoy to neighbouring Jordan.
The Syrian authorities were informed after the employees were safely out of the country.
The unnamed officials told CNN that the worsening situation made it impossible to continue.
