Computers around the globe have been hit by a new ransomware virus dubbed GoldenEye as systems used to monitor radiation at Chernobyl were crippled along with a US pharmaceutical company.

The attack began in Ukraine as the country’s power grid, airport, national bank and communications firms were first to report problems, before it spread rapidly throughout Europe.

Companies in Norway, Russia, Denmark and France are among those to have confirmed issues so far.

The virus then jumped across the Atlantic to the computers of drug firm Merck Sharp and Dohme, which has confirmed it has been hit.

London-based WPP, the world’s largest ad agency, was the first on UK soil to report problems, with staff told to turn off their computers and not to use the WiFi.

One employee at their HQ on London’s South Bank said: ‘We were told to turn our computers off straight away and not to use the WiFi or servers.’

The firm employs 205,000 across the world and CEO Sir Martin Sorrell is highest paid chief executive in the FTSE 100.
