THE majority of Conservative MPs elected in the General Election do not want the UK to severe ties with the EU in the referendum last year, damning research has claimed.

The Tories only gained a large number of target seats in Remain-backing Scotland, leading to suggestions the party is more flexible towards a softer Brexit deal.

Conservative headquarters also appeared to block some anti-EU campaigners, including Daniel Hannan MEP, from becoming candidates.

Financial Times analysis shows 176 of the 317 Conservative MPs now want the UK to stay in the EU.

And out of the 32 Conservatives who gained their seat this month, 18 say they backed Remain and 13 say they backed Leave.

Of the 12 new MPs elected in Scotland, only Ross Thomson of Aberdeen South originally wanted Britain to leave the bloc.

Prime Minister Theresa May and Chancellor Philip Hammond have said there is no turning back from Brexit, yet many are likely to be less committed to a strict interpretation of the referendum result.
