Businessman David Buik praised the Prime Minister’s first offer to Brussels over EU citizens’ rights in the UK as negotiations got underway.

He also branded Britain’s past relationship with Commonwealth nations “disgraceful” and insisted there was a “great big wide world out there” to do business with.

The Brexiteer told BBC News: “It’s exciting, the opportunities to us that we’re going to maintain, we’re going to maintain our relationships to the individual countries in the European Union, we’ve got this great big wide world out there, another 169 trading companies.

“[Look at] the disgraceful way we’ve treated the Commonwealth, let’s have them back – Africa, Asia, America, South America, there’s so much to go for.

“[And there was] a lot of clarity last night with citizens of the European Union going to be able to stay here and we’d be able to stay in the European Union – great news.”

The comments come as the Prime Minister made an offer to the EU to allow all 3million of its citizens currently living in the UK to have full residency status.
