S Representative Steve Scalise remained in critical condition on Friday after he was shot by a gunman earlier in the week who opened fire on Republican lawmakers practicing for a baseball game, according to hospital spokespeople.

Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, sustained injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding after being shot in his left hip on Wednesday morning on a baseball field in the Washington, DC, suburb of Alexandria, Virginia.

The bullet traveled across the congressman’s pelvis and shattered bones, according to The New York Times.

Dr. Jack Sava, a surgeon at MedStar Washington Hospital Center where Scalise is being treated, said that Scalise has shown improvement over the course of the last 36 hours.

He told reporters that when Scalise was first rushed to hospital on Wednesday morning, there was a substantial risk of imminent death.

That risk has since been reduced, according to Sava.

‘His risk of death is substantially lower,’ Sava said.

The hospital said earlier in the week that he had undergone surgery for internal injuries and a broken leg.

Sava would not specify which organs were affected.
