China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp (CASIC), one of the major defence contractors for the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, has announced the successful production of a defensive weapons system.
The new weapon is so complicated and difficult to develop that only Russia and the US were in possession of such technology before, the The China Daily newspaper reports.
According to the publication the development has been described as one of the cornerstones of Beijing’s military advancement and the average age of the scientists and engineers was 32.
Zhao Tong, a nuclear researcher for Global Policy in Beijing, said: “China worries about the impact the US missile defence system would have on China’s counter strike capability.
“It’s China’s biggest concern. To deal with that, China would develop new ground-based, sea-based or multi-head missiles.”
China previously told South Korea to “respect our concerns” in a diplomatic warning over the deployment of US missiles in the country.
Relations between Beijing and Seoul have been tense ever since the deployment of US Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system.
The American system is designed to intercept and destroy short- and medium-range ballistic missiles in the terminal phase of their flight.
