The Prime Minister hit out at the Labour leader, as she said she had been in Italy with other G7 leaders “working to fight terrorism” while Mr Corbyn “said that terror attacks in Britain are our own fault”.

She said: “Jeremy Corbyn has said that terror attacks in Britain are our own fault and he’s chosen to do that just a few days after one of the worst atrocities we have experienced in the United Kingdom.

“I want to make it clear: there can never ever be an excuse for terrorism.

“There can be no excuse for what happened in Manchester.

“The choice people face at the general election is stark – me, working to protect our security or Jeremy Corbyn who frankly isn’t up to the job.”

When asked is Mrs May had done enough to equip the police with funds and powers to deal with terrorist threats, she said she has protected counter-terrorism police funding.

And she added she has also increased powers available to police forces – despite overseeing the removal of 20,000 police jobs while Home Secretary.

She added: “The plan to ensure there was military support for the police is a well prepared plan, developed a while ago so that at a time we go to critical in our threat level that extra support could be made available and that is exactly what happened.”

And although 400 people who went to fight abroad returning to the UK while she was home secretary, the PM said she had excluded more hate preachers from the United Kingdom than any home secretary before and that the issue is managed “on a case-by-case basis”.
