Bashar al Assad has denied killing thousands of detainees at a Syrian prison and then using a secret crematorium to dispose of the remains.
The dictator said allegations by the US State Department that up to 50 people per day are being hanged at Saydnaya prison, near Damascus, are ‘a new Hollywood story detached from reality’.
A Syrian foreign ministry statement published by state news agency SANA said the claims were ‘devoid of truth.’
Stuart Jones, the acting US assistant secretary for Near Eastern Affairs, made the accusations in a press briefing on Monday during which he said Assad’s regime ‘has sunk to a new level of depravity’.
The claims match an Amnesty International report released in February which said up to 13,000 people – mostly civilians opposed to the government – have been hanged in secret at the prison.
