The Terminal High Altitude Area Defence system, better known as THAAD, was sent to South Korea by the US as tensions rose.

But the move was agreed under the South’s last president, Park Geun-hye, who was impeached over a political scandal.

Now the South has elected a new president, Moon Jae-in, who’s signalled that he may scrap the THAAD defences.

The liberal leader has also expressed willingness to engage in talks with North Korea and its ruler, Kim Jong-un.

A spokesman for the new president said his government would “review of the validity of the decision” which saw THAAD deployed.

Choi Jong Kun, Mr Moon’s foreign policy adviser, continued: “While doing it, he will consult with the United States, as well as China.”

He also made reference to Chinese anger at the new defence system, which has led Beijing to enact punishing economic sanctions against South Korea.
