Earlier reports from US Admiral Harry Harris had suggested the missile defence system would become operational “in the coming days” but South Korea’s defence ministry revealed some parts of THAAD are capable of “actual operation”.

The ministry also confirmed some elements of the THAAD system had arrived and were being held in the south of the country.

Moon Sang-gyun, a spokesman for the ministry, said: “The positioning of some equipment means that South Korea and the US have the capability to cope with North Korea’s provocations. It means actual operation.”

He added the THAAD equipment is currently in “field deployment” at its location, a former golf course which South Korea offered to the US Forces Korea (USFK).

It follows another statement by the ministry which said: “South Korea and the United States have been working to secure an early operational capability of the THAAD system in response to North Korea’s advancing nuclear and missile threat.”

The arrival of THAAD system to South Korea came as the nation’s air force was conducting a joint air-to-air combat exercises with the US as part of operation Max Thunder.
