Professor Matthew Goodwin, of the University of Kent, said Front National candidate would struggle in the second round against Emmanuel Macron but insisted his lack of “vision” would become clear to voters in the coming years.
Speaking to talkRADIO, the politics expert said Ms Le Pen’s “protectionist” alternative would become more appealing following Mr Macron’s “transactional, managerial” leadership.
He said: “There’s no doubt Le Pen will struggle in round two but I have a, maybe controversial, theory about what may be about to happen.
“I actually think Le Pen and her team are really enthusiastic about facing Macron. This is the guy who proposed economic reforms three years ago that triggered riots on the streets, he wants to liberalise sections of the French economy.
“She’s a protectionist, she has this principle of what she calls ‘national preference’ where she wants to put French workers first and she wants to put fines on businesses that hire foreign workers and push back against what she calls ‘savage globalisation’.
“I actually think four, five years from now after a centrist president whose come after a left-wing François Hollande presidency… she might be a position to say ‘you’ve tried the left, you’ve tried the centre… you might as well try the National Front’.”
Professor Goodwin then blasted Mr Macron’s approach to the election.
He said: “My concerns with Macron is if you listen to his speech last night [Sunday] after the results were announced, it was a very empty speech, there’s wasn’t a vision, there was no really big idea.
