The former US President allegedly dropped investigations into 14 people wanted for trafficking illicit materials to Iran.

At the time, Barack Obama announced that all were involved with “sanctions-related offences, violations of the trade embargo” and “were not charged with terrorism or any violent offences”.

However it has now emerged Mr Obama’s own Justice Department said they “posed threats of national security”.

They were allegedly part of an illegal procurement network supplying Iran with US-made microelectronics with applications in surface-to-air and cruise missiles.

One of the detainees Seyed Abolfazl Shahab Jamili was charged with conspiring to procure sensors used in centrifuges that enrich uranium, according to news site Politico.

Behrouz Dolatzadeh was also charged with conspiring to buy thousands of American-made assault rifles to illegally import the, into Iran.

America failed to extradite both men and charges against the pair were dropped.
