Moscow has long criticised the build-up of Nato troops from across Europe and North America on the Russian border.

And now the former soviet state is sending planes to observe military buildup in Slovenia and Croatia.

Slovenia, who currently have troops stationed on Latvia’s Russian border, is one of the nations who took part in the ‘Iron sword’ military drills near Putin’s domain last year.

The move was announced by Sergei Ryzhkov, head of the Russian Defence Ministry’s Nuclear Risk Reduction Centre.

He said: “Within the framework of implementation of the Treaty on Open Skies, Russia is planning to carry out an observation flight on the Russian An-30B aircraft over the territory of Slovenia and Croatia.”

The Open Skies treaty was implemented after the Cold War to allow nations the right to observe nearby states to monitor their nuclear capability.

But neither Slovenia nor Croatia are believed to host nuclear weapons, instead relying on nuclear alliances with other nations.
