North Korea, Russia, US, China, Syria and Iran are all flirting with conflict as tensions rage across the globe.

Admiral Lord West, former First Sea Lord, described the world as just a one step away from a nuclear weapon being used for the first time since the end of World War 2.

He told Daily Star Online the world is “more chaotic” than at any time in his 51-year career with the Royal Navy.

Falklands War veteran West said there was a “real concern that by miscalculation someone will do something stupid”.

The top British military mind also called on Britain to spend more on its armed forces in order to secure our position as one of the US’s key allies.

Lord West of Spithead, currently retired and serving as the Chancellor of Southampton Solent University, gave a grim assessment of the world’s security situation under President Trump.

The former captain of HMS Bristol said: “There is more possibility of a nuclear weapon being exploded than there has been in decades – with all the implications that has.

“There likely won’t be counterstrikes, mutually assured destruction and global war – but there are real risks.”

Nuclear fears have spiked as US President Donald Trump squares up to Russia over Syria and sends his “armada” to North Korea under the concerned eye of China.

The US, China and North Korea are all nuclear powers – alongside France, Britain, Pakistan, India and Israel.

Meanwhile, Iran is working under a strict agreement not to start a nuclear weapons programme – but missile tests this year sparked fears the Ayatollah could tear up the treaty.
