The Ifop-Fiducial poll, published on Wednesday, suggests the Front National leader will qualify for the May 7 run-off after being predicted to win 25 per cent of the vote in the April 23 first round.

Her centrist opponent, former economy minister Emmanuel Macron, will likely get 24.5 per cent of the vote, the poll for Paris Match, CNews and Sud Radio showed.

And embattled conservative François Fillon, the former frontrunner, is likely to come third with 18 per cent of the vote.

Hot on Mr Fillon’s heels is Communist-backed firebrand Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who would come fourth with 16 per cent of the vote.

Mr Mélenchon’s strong debate performances have boosted his approval ratings in polls, but his gains have come at the expense of his far-left rival, Benoît Hamon – the Socialist party’s hugely unpopular candidate – who is expected to garner no more than 9.5 per cent of the vote.

In addition, more than two-thirds of those polled – 68 per cent – said that they were “sure” of their decision.

Le Pen voters were the most certain, with 82 per cent sure of their choice, followed by Fillon voters – with 72 per cent – and Macron voters with 66 per cent.
