Speaking to around 2,000 mostly young supporters in Bordeaux, the Front National leader said: “Vote! We all feel it, we are at the dawn of a change of civilisation!”

Le Pen told the crowd she wants to “make sure that young French people can live and work in France” as she outlined her promises to construct more student accommodation, increase housing benefits for under-27s and introduce tax breaks for businesses employing young people.

Her support among the nation’s youth could be a deciding factor in the election with almost a quarter of young French voters backing the far-right hopeful to win, according to a recent Harris Interactive poll.

Some 24 per cent of French voters aged 18 to 24 questioned said they would be voting for the hardline candidate in the first round of the election, which will be held on April 23.

Her main rival, centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron, also received 24 per cent of the French youth vote, while under-fire Francois Fillon was backed by just 10 per cent, according to the poll.

Le Pen used her speech in Bordeaux to attack “savage globalisation”, which she blamed for ruining French industry and the ongoing struggle to reduce youth unemployment, which reached a record high of 25.6 per cent in November 2012.

She said France is “without control, without protection, without frontiers”, and called join her supporters to revive the European idea in the diversity of the nations of Europe, which has its roots in a rich history.”
