‘If Le Pen wins Europe is FINISHED’ – Former Italian PM says French shock would ruin bloc

The 50-year-old former leader of Italy has said the election of the Front National presidential candidate would, ultimately, lead to the collapse of the European Union as it would prevent the revival of the “French-German axis”.
In an interview with ABC the Europhile said : “2017 will be the year for relaunching the Franco-German axis. Living in Paris, I can see that in France, unless Marine Le Pen wins – because if she wins, Europe is over – the idea of [Emmanuel] Macron and [Francois] Fillon is to relaunch the Franco-German axis.
“And the same thing in Germany, where Angela Merkel and Martin Schulz, two very pro-European candidates, will relaunch the Franco-German axis.”
Mr Letta blamed the problems in Europe not on the European Union (EU) but on globalisation.
He continued: “The difficulties of our present society are not due to Europe, but to globalisation… To think that Europe is the cause of our problems is a serious error of perspective…
“The cause of our problems lies in globalisation, in the fact that European countries, once the centre of the world, are now challenged by the new great powers that in recent years have become giants such as China, India and Brazil. A century ago, European inhabitants represented a quarter of the world population. In a few decades, we will be a twentieth part.”
