Central Switzerland was struck by the 4.6 magnitude quake on Monday night, with dozens of aftershocks continuing for hours afterwards.
The Swiss Seismological Service (SED), based in Zurich, said the earthquake hit shortly after 9pm local time.
In a statement, the SED said: “This earthquake is likely to have been felt across Switzerland.”
The quake struck at a depth of 5km near Urnerboden in the Swiss Alps, with 5,000 reports of the quake being felt in Bern, Basel and Zurich.
One woman in Glarus told local media she was thrown off her sofa from the force of the quake with residents reporting falling shelves and computers and strong shaking.
More aftershocks are expected in the next few days with the SED refusing to rule out the possibility of another earthquake.
