Front National leader Marine Le Pen has threatened to pull France out of the EU if she wins the upcoming presidential election – and the survey suggests a large number of French voters wish to leave the bloc and are unhappy with Francois Hollande’s government.

The survey of 1,001 French adults found “8 in 10 French people do not trust the government, the parliament, the European Parliament, or the European Commission”.

Think-tank Demos said: “Mistrust in the European Parliament and the European Commission is also very high, since, on a scale of 1 to 10 measuring trust, 82 per cent of the population gives a score below 5 to both of these institutions.

“These results are particularly significant because they show the erosion of trust in the European institutions, which traditionally had a more positive image than national ones.”

A 485-page report by UK-based think tank Demos found “low levels of trust in both EU and national-level governments and political institutions”.

A survey of voters in France Germany, Poland, Spain, Sweden and Great Britain reveals a wave of discontent with Brussels with “a widespread sense of precariousness, uncertainty and pessimism” over the EU.
