Despotic leader Kim Jong-un frequently flaunts its nuclear capabilities in a show of strength against its neighbour South Korea and the West.

And now satellite photos taken of the secretive regime appear to confirm many peoples’ worst fear; that the Yongbyon nuclear facility is up and running.

The move comes as Donald Trump’s new defence secretary, Jim Mattis, confirmed they would be deploying a US missile defence system, known as Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), in South Korea later this year.

Operations at the 5 MWe plutonium production reactor at the Nuclear Scientific Research Center in Yongbyon are thought to have resumed after tell-tale signs were spotted in aerial photos.

Images taken last month indicated Pyongyang had restarted the reactor, following the removal of spent fuel rods.

They were unloaded for a reprocessing campaign to produce additional plutonium for its highly controversial nuclear programme and weapons stockpile.
