President-elect Donald Trump has called on the nation to celebrate Martin Luther King day and hailed the ‘wonderful things’ that King stood for – as he prepares to meet with Martin Luther King III following a spat with civil rights icon John Lewis.
As the nation was marking King’s legacy Monday, Trump tweeted: ‘Celebrate Martin Luther King Day and all of the many wonderful things that he stood for.’
He added: ‘Honor him for being the great man that he was!’
Trump’s praise for the man who helped bring about an end to racial segregation and transform American society came as he prepared to meet with Martin Luther King III in New York Monday – after scrubbing a trip to Washington following a spat with civil rights here Rep. John Lewis of Georgia.
The two men will meet ‘to talk about the legacy of Dr. King, ways that we can continue to enfranchise people and advocate for more people to be part of the voting process and further the legacy that Dr. King fought so hard for,’ incoming spokesman Sean Spicer revealed Monday morning in an appearance on ‘Fox and Friends.’
The sit down with the oldest son of the civil rights hero comes just days after Trump got in a spat with Lewis, whom he accused of being ‘all talk, talk, talk – no action or results’ notwithstanding Lewis having been bloodied marching for civil rights.
