In a letter to the Prime Minister, senior Tory MP Sir Gerald Howarth has warned that if she does not set an immediate end to free movement Britain is likely to be flooded by record numbers of migrants when she triggers Article 50.

Already immigration figures have hit record levels and it is feared that hundreds of thousands more will try to beat an extended deadline to be allowed the right to remain in the UK.

The former defence minister, who was writing on behalf of the leading Brexit group Leave Means Leave, said that a surge would mean Britain’s public services would be overwhelmed.

He said: “Setting a date to end freedom of movement months ahead risks a mass influx of migration from EU countries, from people seeking to beat a deadline – potentially far higher than the unacceptable levels we have already experienced year-on-year.
