The Communist country sent its only aircraft carrier through the Taiwan strait, considered part of Taiwan’s defence identification zone.

After conducting training exercises in the dispute South China Sea the ship sailed through the contested waters, prompting Taiwan to scramble its own military forces to monitor the vessel.

The Taiwanese central news agency confirmed it sent fighter jets, an anti-submarine plane and a frigate to watch the ship.

The carrier, called the Liaoning, was said to be returning to its base in northeast China through the strait, a trip which will take some 10 hours.

The provocation comes as tensions were nearly at breaking point between China and President-elect Trump.

The billionaire broke with decades of protocol to speak with the Taiwanese president, Tsai Ing-wen, after his US election win, prompting outrage from China.
