Los Angeles has been hit by more than 250 small earthquakes, while three large tremors rattled northern Oklahoma.

The flurry of earthquakes struck the end of the Brawley Seismic Zone, which is described as an active region where tectonic plates are moving and the Earth’s crust is getting stretched out, on New Year’s Eve.

The most powerful quake was magnitude 3.9, striking underneath the town of Brawley, about 170 miles south east of Los Angeles, according to the LA Times.
