MORE than 250 small earthquakes have struck the Californian border with Mexico, sparking fears of an impending colossal quake among residents and scientists.

The flurry of quakes struck in the southern end of the Brawley Seismic Zone on Saturday.

The zone is a seismically active region where tectonic plates are moving away from each other.

This causes the Earth’s crust to stretch out and is “basically adding land”, according to seismologist Egill Hauksson, from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

The zone falls in the region that connects the San Andreas fault with the Imperial fault, both of which have the potential to cause catastrophic earthquakes.

Extending about 30 miles, the Brawley Seismic Zone stretches across the Salton Sea’s southern half and ends near Bombay Beach.

The swarm’s most powerful tremor was a 3.9 magnitude quake, which struck underneath the town of Brawley.

But Mr Hauksson, who was monitoring the swarm, warned there was a chance a tremor with a magnitude of 5 or higher could be triggered.

He told the LA Times: “There’s always reason to be concerned for a bigger earthquake.”
