CHINA has displayed its military strength by showing off an aircraft carrier in the Pacific and an upgraded combat aircraft in a warning sign to Donald Trump.

The show of strength is largely being viewed as a response to the President-Elect’s warmth towards Taiwan, which wants to be independent from China.

Chinese state-controlled media announced that the country’s only aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, was on its way to the Pacific for the first time, while a new fighter, the FC-31, had its debut flight test.

The Chinese administration has been consistently strengthening its military for several years as its economy booms.

China’s actions come after Mr Trump broke with four decades of US protocol by accepting a phone call from Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen – though China forbids its allies from contact with the country.

The two countries split in 1949 but China still views Taiwan as part of its territory and could reunify with it at any point – even if it required military force.

The Taiwanese authorities have been closely watching China’s actions as the Liaoning moved dangerously close to its borders in the South China Sea.
