A war hero accused James Mattis, Donald Trump’s pick for defense secretary, of ‘betraying his duty’ and ‘leaving my men to die’ after the Green Berets were hit by friendly fire in Afghanistan.

Retired Lieutenant Colonel Jason Amerine was leading the US Special Forces in December 2001 protecting the future Afghan president Hamid Karzai when they were hit by a US smart bomb.

Two American soldiers were instantly killed, and Staff Sergeant Brian Cody Prosser, 28, was badly wounded before he died. Dozens of Afghans were also killed.

It is unclear whether Prosser would have survived had they received help sooner, but Mattis, a brigadier general in charge of a group of Marines about 45 minutes away, refused requests to send their helicopters, according to sources who spoke to NBC.

Trump announced Mattis’ appointment at an Ohio rally on Thursday night, to the support of politicians from both parties.

But the decorated Marine commander will need to be approved in Congress to bypass a law barring military officers from becoming defense secretary within seven years of leaving active duty.
