US WARSHIPS have arrived in the Mediterranean after a deployment in the Gulf – putting American sailors in the firing line of a Russia’s naval fleet which is also based in the region.

Amphibious assault ship USS Wasp and amphibious landing dock ship USS Whidbey Island are now patrolling the Mediterranean with 4,000 sailors and marines on board after travelling through the Suez Canal.

The US vessels spent more than three months supporting Operation Odyssey Lightning in the fight against Islamic State militants in Sirte, Libya.

Both ships safely completed the journey north through ‘The Ditch’, as sailors often refer to the 101-mile-long Suez Canal, in 15 hours.

The canal connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, allowing vessels to avoid the lengthy trip around the Cape of Good Hope, the southernmost point of Africa.

However, the US fleet is now competing for space alongside several Russian warships, including the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, Peter the Great battle cruiser, Admiral Grigorovich frigate and Severomorsk destroyer.

Admiral Kuznetsov – Russia’s only aircraft carrier – hit the headlines earlier this year when it skirted the British coastline en route to Syria from the Arctic.
