The inferno, which began overnight in the Foggia camp, quickly turned into a tinderbox as the 500 wooden and cardboard shanties set alight within minutes.
Two migrants were rushed to hospital, one suffering from smoke inhalation and another from a broken leg, which shattered after he fell as he tried to flee the flames.
Italian authorities are not treating the incident as arson because they believe the fire was sparked by a stove.
Initial fears of a deliberate attack on the camp – either by irate locals, or by the refugees themselves – have proved unfounded after speculation migrants torched their own shacks similar to the blaze in Calais days before the Jungle was closed.
