If you’re in the market for storable food, buyer beware: a lot of what you’ll find on the market today is a chemical nightmare. Think genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), synthetic preservatives, monosodium glutamate (MSG) and its various derivatives, hydrogenated oils, and pesticide and herbicide residues – everything you don’t want to put inside your body when your life is potentially on the line.

With the seemingly extreme volatility of today’s world, many people are looking to stock up on food and other supplies that will last them for a good while should the lights go out, driving our “just-in-time” delivery system to a screeching halt. There’s nothing wrong with taking such precautionary measures, except when it involves sacrificing your dietary standards on the altar of convenience.

Many of the most popular storable food brands – companies like WISE Foods, Mountain House, Legacy Premium, and various others – claim to offer the best food in the industry. But it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that this isn’t always the case: anyone who can read an ingredients label will immediately see that what these companies advertise and what they offer to the public are, in some cases, diametrically opposed.
