Two people died when a 7.5-magnitude quake struck yesterday, with a second 6.3-magnitude quake striking just after midnight tonight.
A third strong quake, measuring 5.8-magnitude, struck near Kaikoura on the east coast of the South Island at around 7am GMT.
The town had already been cut off by numerous landslides and destroyed roads and bridges following the first quakes and tremors.
More than 600 residents and 1,200 tourists are now stuck in the town, with Prime Minister John Key warning they were now facing “horrendous” conditions.
He said: “It’s pretty horrendous for the people of Kaikoura and there will be a massive cleanup.”
