A strong Magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Japan yesterday, causing significant shaking at the Fukushima Nuclear meltdown disaster site, resulting in a significant radiation spike throughout that area!

With the world’s attention focused on the election of Donald Trump as US President, this piece of important news seems to have fallen under the radar. But as reports come in of a serious spike in radiation from the Fukushima disaster site, attention is now being paid to this developing story.

The earthquake took place at 21:42 Hrs UTC in the Pacific Ocean about two kilometers off the coast of Japan, at a shallow depth of only 44.8 km. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake registers as a “6” on the Mercali Shake Scale, meaning the perceived shaking at the surface was “strong” and the probability of damage was “light.” HOWEVER, with the Fukushima nuclear disaster site having been so badly damaged in the magnitude 9 earthquake of March, 2011, the “normal” assessment of “light” damage is not applicable.
