Political outsider Donald Trump could easily win the presidency given that 2016 is a year of cataclysmic change in human history, with the Chicago Cubs winning their first World Series in 108 years and British voters rejecting their vassalage to the EU.
Few mainstream sports writers expected the Cubs to win after they fell into a 3-1 deficit during the World Series, yet despite having their backs against the wall, the Cubs won the final two games on the road, the first team to do so since the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates.
How the Cubs won was nearly as sensational as their drought: the last time the Cubs won a World Series, the Ottoman Empire still existed, New Mexico wasn’t even a state and the RMS Titanic hadn’t been built yet.
But the Cubs victory follows another unprecedented event of 2016: Brexit.
No one expected the UK to successfully vote its way out of the EU given the EU’s decades-long history of stopping countries from leaving the “union.”
