The presidential candidate’s campaign has reportedly shelled out $63,000 on five days worth of adverts that will start airing when the hurricane is due to hit Florida.

Both Clinton and her Republican rival Donald Trump risk being bumped off the news as the storm is due to hit two important election battlegrounds, Florida and South Carolina.

But with just a month to go until the election, Mrs Clinton refuses to be taken off air and has bought airtime on The Weather Channel, which unsurprisingly experience a spike in viewers during storms such as Matthew.

Viewers from across the United States are expected to tune into the channel to watch footage of the category four hurricane, with Clinton’s campaign also buying up airtime in Pennsylvania and New Hampshire.

Reports of the ad spend were criticised by Republicans with Mr Trump supporters branding Mrs Clinton “beyond pathetic” for capitalising on the storm which has already seen two million people evacuated from their homes.
