Over the past year, the world has watched on nervously as Jong-un repeatedly ignored warnings and steamed ahead with multiple nuclear missile tests – an aggressive policy that has resulted in condemnations and sanctions.
In a direct response, South Korea and the US agreed in July to deploy America’s terminal high altitude area defence (Thad) anti-missile system to combat against threats from the hermit kingdom.
But the plan has prompted Chinese officials to step up action against the move, with furious officials warning of an inevitable “counter attack” amid growing concerns the powerful radar will compromise its own security.
In a comment piece for the People’s Daily, the official media outlet for the Chinese Community Party, it read: “If the United States and South Korea harm the strategic security interests of countries in the region including China, then they are destined to pay the price for this and receive a proper counter-attack.”
Seething Chinese officials have made their opposition clear, warning the deployment could compromise its security and inflame tensions with its volatile neighbour.
The commentary continued: “Like any other country, China can neither be vague nor indifferent on security matters that affects its core interest.”
