Strong earthquake rocks Philippines coast with tremors felt 400 miles away
THE ISLAND of Mindanao was shaken by a strong earthquake that could be felt hundreds of miles away in neighbouring provinces.

The quake, initially reported as a magnitude 6.5, struck in the early hours of the morning local time (22:53 GMT) while unsuspecting Filipinos were tucked up in bed.
The deep tremor struck 43 miles below the seabed, initially sparking fears that the massive quake could cause a devastating tsunami.
However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated that the quake would not trigger a tsunami in the region.
The tremors could be felt approximately 400 miles away on neighbouring Cebu island.
Nearby Ateneo de Davao University has since called off classes as buildings are inspected to ensure the tremors have not damaged the buildings’ foundations.
A magnitude 6.5 quake is considered strong and is capable of causing severe damage, but the effects of this one are likely to be diminished by the quake’s depth and the fact that it occurred offshore.
