Pyongyang spokesperson Ri Yong Ho blamed the “hostile policy” of the US for escalating tensions in the region – which Mr Ri described as “the world’s most dangerous hot spot”.

The B-1B bombers flew through South Korean airspace, with US officials later confirming that one approached the northern border.

Northern officials believe that the supersonic bomber crossed the line of demarcation designed to create distance between the warring north and south.

Mr Ri said: “The United States will have to face tremendous consequences beyond imagination.”

He added that the North “will continue to take measures to strengthen its national nuclear armed forces in both quantity and quality” to “defend the dignity and safeguard genuine peace vis-a-vis the increased nuclear war threat of the US.”

But US Secretary of State John Kerry called on the UN to endorse resolutions and sanctions to make sure the Kim Jong-Un regime pays for its “dangerous actions”.
