Four teenagers have been arrested for terrorism-related offences in less than two weeks in a development that Jean-Jacques Urvoas has labelled “troubling”.

All four were said to have fallen “under the spell” of Rachid Kassim, a French ISIS militant and recruiter accused of orchestrating several terrorist attacks via the jihadis’ encrypted private messaging app Telegram.

Mr Urvoas denied claims made by the French newspaper Le Figaro on Friday morning saying that the number of underage ISIS followers in France has risen by 121 per cent since January, but did acknowledge that hundreds of “teenage terrorists” are on Government watchlists.

He said: “Six hundred teenage extremists have been placed under surveillance – 150 of them were turned in by their parents.”

The defence minister added that 14 youths were currently serving a prison sentence for terrorism-related offences – 11 boys and three girls.
