Kayla Mueller, from Phoenix, Arizona, endured torture, abuse and rape for years at the hands of senior ISIS leaders – including the self-declared caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
But, Ms Mueller stood out as a fearless and selfless hero among her fellow hostages because she never gave up hope or her faith in God.
According to a former hostage, Ms Mueller even stood up to notorious ISIS Executioner Jihadi John – real name Mohammed Emwazi – to rebuke his claim that she had converted to Islam.
Four former hostages who shared cells with the American captive have finally revealed her heroic actions while being held captive in the Syrian city of Raqqa.
Ms Mueller was kidnapped by ISIS while working as a humanitarian aid worker in Syria in August 2013.
She was repeatedly raped and abused during her time as a hostage and became the personal ‘sex slave’ of al-Baghdadi.
But, despite the most horrible of circumstances, Ms Mueller never surrendered hope and selflessly put the welfare of fellow captives above her own.
In an interview with ABC News’ 20/20 broadcast, ‘The Girl Left Behind,’ fellow hostages claim Emwazi, who would later be dubbed Jihadi John as he carried out ISIS beheadings, oversaw their imprisonment.
