Frauke Petry, head of the Alternative for Germany party (AfD), said the country’s Office for Migration and Refugees should be converted to a “Remigration authority”.

She added: “This brings illegal migrants and rejected asylum seekers to two UN-protected islands outside of Europe.”

The “remigration authority” would make sure “all illegal entrants in the country leave as quickly as possible”, according to Mrs Petry.

The 41-year-old, who became leader of the controversial right-wing party last year, added the policy would see unaccompanied men separated from women and families.

She told German newspaper Bild: “It is better value for money and, above all, safer for women than the current system.”

The former chemist also hit out at the “ridiculous” record of deportations in Germany, saying: “Up until 2016 there were just 13,743 deportations.
