TERROR fears have prompted French officials to cancel a string of summer events as armed police and soldiers descend on European cities in a desperate attempt to prevent fresh attacks by Islamist jihadis.

Angela Merkel has ordered the deployment of German troops on the streets for the first time since the Second World War as the country braces itself for another attack.

German defence minster Ursula von der Leyen said the massacre in Paris last November had “opened all our eyes” to the threat as she announced the army would bolster the work of the police in maintaining domestic security.

The announcement is significant as troops have only been deployed on home soil to deal with natural disasters since the collapse of Nazi Germany.

Anti-terror drills will also be conducted with the involvement of Gernany’s regional and national security agencies.

The country has been hit by four separate attacks in recent weeks, including when an axe-wielding Afghan refugee attacked passengers on a train near Wurzburg and a Syrian refugee carried out a suicide bombing at a music festival near Ansbach.

Joachim Herrmann, interior minister of Bavaria, where the incidents took place, said: “We have an absolutely stable democracy.

“It would be completely incomprehensible if we had a terror situation like in Brussels in Frankfurt, Stuttgart or Munich and were not allowed to deploy the well-trained forces of the Bundeswehr even though they were available.”
