A dangerous heatwave spreading across the country has meant that 26 states have been put under a heat advisory – from California to New York.
The warnings are affecting more than 100million Americans and it’s also the first time that all the major cities – including New York, Chicago and Los Angeles – have had heat warnings in place at the same time, NBC’s Today show reports.
In New York City, ozone pollution levels are so high that an air quality advisory is also in effect. The city is expected to hit 97 degrees on Saturday – and people are being urged to take public transportation as a result, but temperatures underground are unbearable.
Many other places on the East Coast are expected to see temperatures soar above 100 on Sunday, including Washington, D.C, Chicago and Cincinnati.

‘It’s just day after day. Merciless,’ said Jeff Masters, meteorology director of the private Weather Underground. ‘We don’t often see this much of the country this hot for this length of time.’
