Colli Albani, just 19 miles from the centre of the Italian city, has the potential to erupt with the same intensity as Mount Vesuvius, which wiped out Pompeii in 79AD, according to researchers.
A team of scientists from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Rome noticed that the land around the thought-to-be extinct volcano has been rising by 2mm a year since 1993.
This is an indication that magma is beginning to build beneath the surface and that the volcano could blow.
Further analysis of the rocks around the volcano showed that it has not erupted in 36,000 years, and that it has an eruption cycle of 31,000 years, meaning that it is overdue.
