Beijing has begun a war of words warning it is not afraid of trouble after the UN ruled it had no ‘historic rights’ to claim territory in the South China Sea.
China had said it had expansive claims to the waters but the Philippines brought a case to the Permananent Court of Arbitration in The Hague challenging the position.
But today the tribunal announced it would be ruling against China on the case and said in a statement: ‘The Tribunal concluded that there was no legal basis for China to claim historic rights within the sea areas falling within the ‘nine-dash line.’
