Shocking footage shows a gang of frantic looters piling into a store and ransacking its shelves.

Such alarming scenes are becoming worryingly common in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas as the country is wracked by food shortages with at least four people dead as a result of riots and lootings in the last week.

CCTV shows hoards of hungry civilians charging into supermarket and grabbing anything they can get their hands on.

The cashier quickly escapes the crowds, as do nervous shoppers, keen to get away from the fray.

One man heads straight for the till and tries to empty it on the floor.

Others leap over the counter to pillage the contents behind. A young girl can be seen nabbing cigarettes and stuffing them into her bag.

No one seems to hesitate in taking everything and anything, so great is their desperation. No barrier is an obstacle as they clamber over whatever is in their way, with some giving orders to friends when they are unable to get to something themselves.
