That substance is confirmed to be sodium hydroxide, or lye
Lye can burn skin and eyes on contact, and damage lungs if inhaled
It can also create enough heat to ignite gas if put in contact with water
A gas line was also ruptured and the supply has now been turned off

A train crash resulted in a hazardous substance being spilled and a gas line being ruptured in a Washington, D.C. suburb early Sunday morning, emergency officials have said.

As many as 11 cars tumbled off the tracks after the CSX freight train derailed near the Rhode Island Avenue Metro station 6:40am, with one of them spilling sodium hydroxide – a substance that can burn human skin and eyes, and generate enough heat to ignite gas.

The supply to the gas line has been turned off and it is unclear how many people have been affected by the closure, NBC Washington reported.

Doug Buchanan, a spokesman for the D.C fire department, had previously told NBS that at least three of the approximately 11 derailed cars were leaking hazardous material.

‘It looks like our guys have got this pretty well contained,’ he said. ‘Two, possibly three, of the derailed cars are leaking hazardous material.’

But a tweet from the fire department confirmed that the chemical in the leak was sodium hydroxide.
