A quake registering 5.2 on the Richter scale struck the southwest of France near the towns of La Rochelle and Rochefort in the region of Charente-Maritime.
Witnesses have described feeling two strong tremors lasting several seconds.
Buildings, including industrial sites and schools in La Rochelle, have been evacuated.
A student at a school in La Rochelle said: “Our walls moved, our computers too.”
Another witness from La Rochelle told Sud-Ouest: “I was in bed sleeping when I felt strong tremors.
“To begin with I thought it was building work and then I realised it was an earthquake.
“It didn’t last long but it was quite strong and I was scared.”
